Since July they have sold close to a million albums and announced their intention to bid for the coveted Christmas No1 slot with Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End). Their cheesiness knows no bounds but, similarly, it is their sheer gall which has helped to get them this far. That and some superhero costumes and choruses.
This almost primitive cocktail made Friday’s show one of the most eagerly anticipated gigs of the season. Some style notes to start: unapologetically camp singer Justin Hawkins’ spangly superhero costume flares were sufficiently tight to aid his ear-piercing falsetto notes. Bassist Frankie Poullain was a nightmare vision in bandana and silver edged blouse. Musically, they ran the rock gamut from lighter-waving anthems to noodling guitar solos via heavy duty riffs and glam stomping. But their songs are irresistibly infectious. I Believe In a Thing Called Love, in catsuit particular, is the most catchy rock hit in eons.
Some highlights which must be shared: a bearded man in a slashed-to-the-waist tiger-print catsuit invaded the stage – he turned out to be Poullain’s stepbrother, the comedian Phil Kay, procrastinating while Hawkins changed into a candy-striped caped Full Body Shiny Metallic Purple with Gold Unisex Zentai Suit . Even as a veteran of Yes concerts, I have never witnessed the like. Nor heard a disrespectfully rockist version of Radiohead’s elegiac Street Spirits.

IT’S not often that I recommend a radio show - spiderman costumes DJs’ musical tastes, on the whole, tend to be too inconsistent to rely on – but On the Wire’s presenter Steve Barker has been at this for 24 years and, like John Peel, has been there and done that. The stuff he plays mines the world of reggae, hip-hop, electro, the further reaches of Indie and the avant garde.
HOURS of fun with this one. While the perception of YouTube tends to be as a repository of ancient pop videos, animals doing funny things and people mixing Pepsi and Mentos to hilarious effect, there is other stuff. Interesting spiderman movie 3, informative stuff. Like the BFI channel, which has hours and hours of fascinating videos that you could trawl for ever and not get bored (except the one that has Keith Chegwin, which is just plain weird).
AH, another return to gaming days of yore. At the peak catsuit of the ZX Spectrum’s reign, Monty Mole appeared and won the hearts of many. I don’t think I ever actually owned this, rather it was a ratty copy that only worked when the sun and moon were in the correct alignment. But I loved the stupidity of it – Monty is on the run after getting on the wrong side of the law during the miners’ strike Blue & Silver Shiny Metallic Unisex Zentai Suit. A bizarre collision of left-wing politics and eye-slashing colour-clash graphics. Hours of nose-bleed frustrating fun.

France’s Suzanne Lenglen, the game’s first true tennis celebrity, revolutionized the superman costume outfit in the 1920s. She had the famed couturier Jean Patou create a pleated knee-length chemise that she wore without a corset. She kept her hair back with a bandeau, which became all the rage for stylish women off the court. Most exotically, she sported white silk stockings held in place with French coins.

Daniela Hantuchova, the stick-thin Slovakian star, modeled this style in Vogue a few months back. The most popular big cat was the leopard. First (in the twenties) the real thing lolita dress was used for trims on jackets and coats. According to the Sterns, “ferocious cats mean power and sexuality”. In the past couple of years leopard skin has been reclaimed. Vogue called the recent return to leopard skin “more amusing than risque” and everyone from Naomi Campbell to Annie Lennox have been spotted in leopard spots costume spiderman. The white bedroom of Cher’s Malibu home has leopard skin-print upholstery.
The association of women and cats goes back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and Bastet, daughter of Isis, whose temple was one of the most impressive in all Egypt. Bastet was a fertility goddess who took the form of a cat-headed woman. Her sacred animal was also a cat. Pop biographer Blue Spaghetti Latex Corset Set Albert Goldman has likened Grace Jones to this cat goddess.

The romance that the retailer is most interested in promoting is not the one zentai suit between bride and groom but that between bride and gown. Kleinfeld, the wedding-costume zentai retail store in Brooklyn, greets women who make an appointment with a letter that announces, “We believe the day you choose your wedding gown should be as joyful and memorable as the day you wear it.”
One evening last fall, hundreds of young women attended a Bridal Expo at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square. After standing in long lines to enter, they swarmed the scores of booths that were occupied by costume zentai venders, linen and tableware companies, jewellers, tuxedo- and limousine-rental companies, and representatives of every imaginable division of the bridal business. The highlight of the evening was a catwalk show of bridal fashions. But, before the show began, a mistress of gothic lolita dresses ceremonies poked fun at the few sheepish-looking men who had dared to attend. “Have you noticed how, from the minute you put that ring on her finger, your fiancee starts suffering from P.M.S.?” she said. “I mean premarital syndrome. She has lost all interest in things that aren’t to do with her wedding day. You’ve got to understand: She already had the costume zentai picked out, she had the church picked out, she had the music picked out. You were the last element she picked out.”
The contemporary conception of the betrothal period as an extended occasion for retail consumption and elaborate event production is a boon for wedding professionals, among whose gloomier number are those who have feared that the traditional American wedding may be going the way of the traditional American nuclear family. This was the question adcostume zentaied at a seminar entitled “Winning Bridal Strategies,” which was held not long ago at a semiannual trade show in Las Vegas, at which bridal-store owners from around the country view the latest in wedding-costume zentai designs, place orders, share gossip, and pick up business-management skills. The bridal market was held at the Tropicana Hotel-one of the less luxurious of the city’s resorts, its main attraction being not a scale model of the Eiffel Tower or an indoor replica of the Grand Canal but a ticktacktoe-playing chicken against which a challenger stood to win up to ten thousand dollars. For five days last September, the hotel looked like backstage at a Moonie Red Latex Riding Catsuit . In display cases, there were enough tiaras to restore every deposed monarchy in history. The endless amount of product appeared, to the untrained eye, deceptively similar and induced, after a few hours, what bridal-store owners call “white blindness.” Retailers, however, could discern important distinctions among gowns when it came to stitching, boning, and the ease with which a wearer would be able to “Y.M.C.A.” at her reception.

I obviously subscribe to zentai catsuit weekly emails which notify me when the online shopping mecca has received new shipments of my “favorite designers.” So, on Monday when I saw that Net-a-Porter was now carrying Chloe’s summer/fall shoe line, I screamed in delight! My absolute favorite from zentai new line are these sexy Leather Lace-Up Boots. Boots are incredibly stylish and practical, but I love these not only for their design, but also because they have a perfectly sized wooden heel in the back to add a few extra inches.
I’m currently in Japan, and it seems to me that the Japanese women are serious trendsetters. One of the most current trends here is Southwestern style of dressing, and these shoes are the perfect combination of the cheap superhero costumes wild west and the 21st century. I absolutely adore these boots, and I think they’d look great on the feet of anyone, anywhere in the world.
